Silence is Not only Golden, It’s Peaceful!

I have a cold. I have laryngitis.  I can’t speak, at least not anything above a whisper.  I’m amazed at how much I notice just not talking. I’m watching my children in a different way. How they interact with one another. Even if I wanted to, I can’t fuss at them for not picking up a toy.  However, I can give them a litle look that tells them exactly what I mean.  And they understand.

Yesterday I watched two bumblebees outside my living room window, flitting around together, in harmony.  Usually they annoy me.  They seem to stalk us whenever we leave the house to go to the car.  Now, I just see them in the sunshine and somehow appreciate them more.

I’m writing notes to my husband to convey my thoughts.  In my mind I’m transported back to when I was 15 and he was 16, when we’d write notes to each other.

In these days since I lost my voice, I’m more aware of my breathing, my heart beating in my chest, and every thought seems more memorable.  I’ve taken plenty of notes, doodled plenty of ideas.

Strangely, this time of silence has been more than I thought silence could be. I don’t remember having this particular kind of silence since I last lost my voice, before I had children. More than 9 years ago.  During this quiet time, I remember what the “word” says about putting a guard over your mouth. Each word that you put into the atmosphere must be exactly what you intended to say. I must be careful about the words I string together. Words are precious and cannot be taken back.

When my voice is restored, I will be extra careful about the words I choose. I’ll make sure to pick nicer, more tender words more often. And I think I still might take a few hours in the day to verbally use as few words as possible.  Silence seems to bring a peace that’s worth more than gold.

Love You!

No matter what life brings or what you bring to your life, love yourself every  day.  Cherish all the wonderful and witty things about you.  Make a strong, endearing impression on yourself.

Know that you are blessed.  Believe in all the wonderful things your life has in store- just for you.

Don’t forget your eternal spirit.  Be quiet and listen to what your spirit is trying to tell you.  Be faithful to the truth of your spirit.  Your spirit is a stream of support, peace and success, flowing into infinity.  Just don’t fight against its current.  Take each valuable lesson as it comes.  In everything you do, shine.  Be who you are.  Be proud of the woman you are.  Own everything that you have gone through, mistakes and all.  Be independent, but realize that we’re all placed here together for a reason.  If God wanted us all to live singular experiences and not be of help to each other, he could have dropped each of us off on our own private star.

Reach for all those things you truly want.  In this valley of shadows, turmoil and turbulence, take comfort in your spirit- your shelter and your beacon of hope.  Be safe and keep your spirit clean.  Grow wiser and stronger.  Live boldly, as your spirit reveals more of iteself to you and to the world.

Take the job of loving you seriously.  My sister woman, you are truly beautiful.  So, dance, sing, laugh, smile, reflect, reminisce, learn, teach, encourage, believe, love others and LOVE YOU!

34 Important Things You Should Know About Me

1. I’m not impressed by what you do or what you have. Your kindness & standing with God is all that matters.

2. Raising children in the way of the Lord is the most important gift I can give my children.

3. When you dedicate your works to God, He will crown your efforts with His glory.

4. When I seemed to “have it all together,” I didn’t. Now, I am often questioned about my choices and I couldn’t be more at peace or certain about my destination.

5. I’ve never had a cigarette or been a drinker. I took my prenatal vitamins faithfully. I did “everything right” and my 1st daughter was born prematurely at only 23 weeks gestation, weighing 1 lb 4.5 oz, 20 1/4″ long. Doctors had the audacity to say she wouldn’t be a “viable person.” So fortunate for us, God showed up and saved our daughter. She is a living, breathing, creative miracle I am blessed to witness everyday! All those dimes we used to collect for March of Dimes never before meant so much.

6. I am proud to be the mother of four creative children, 3 bright girls and 1 cutie patootie boy (8, 6, 4 & 3). All were breastfed and are now being homeschooled.

7. My husband & I both do our best to serve God, whether God’s ways are popular or not.

8. Psalm 113:8 and Proverb 31:28 are about me.

9. I am proud to live by Proverb 31!

10. I’ve learned not to compare my children to other kids, to their siblings or even to myself. It’s so important to let them just be them and take steps when they’re comfortable.

11. King David’s life inspires me. He lived an enchanted life as well as one of trials and tribulations. I strive to have his kind of heart everyday. So, I read at least one Psalm daily. I need fresh “manna” everyday. Apostle Paul’s (Saul) transformation is something I can definitely identify with.

12. Doctors don’t know much or as much as they think they do. As a matter of fact, people generally don’t either. Ask God first.

13. I’m a fairly good cook. I used to dream of having my own cooking show- way back when I only watched chefs on PBS.

14. I love thrift store bargains. This is no new development. My mom & I used to shop in thrift stores when I was little. I recently found a pair of black Steve Madden flats marked $1.99, but I only paid $1. It was 50% off Monday!

15. I still have and can wear some clothes I wore when I was a teenager.

16. We’re not twins, but my husband is my best friend. He knows me better than anyone else and still loves me. No one could ever know me like he does. We are really, finally “one flesh.” This is forever.

17. I personally know the undeniable, restorative powers of God. Just one word from Him can transform your life, any life or situation. Just ask Him to. Give your life to God and your latter will be greater than your former.

18. Washing dishes relaxes me. It’s weird, I know.

19. I can function well any time of the day, but I’m really a night owl. I love going to the grocery store when they’re stocking the shelves.

20. I consider myself more spiritual than religious. It’s about my heart and how I live my life, not where I go on Sundays for a couple of hours.

21. My kids can be 30 years old and they never have to leave home. We love them and always want them to be close.

22. When you calibrate yourself in God’s ways, what others think doesn’t matter as much as before.

23. I know that God requires obedience over sacrifice. A very crucial lesson.

24. The best pieces of advice I ever received: #1 was from my husband’s aunt, “The two of you should pray together. There’s such power there.” So, so very true.

25. #2 “Baby, a piece o’ loaf (man) is better than no loaf.” I’d like to qualify that by saying I believe this only if you’re dealing with a person truly good at heart and willing to become a better person daily.

26. I’m sure that most probably don’t care about this but- My 1st daughter was born by C-section. I gave birth to each of my other 3 children naturally-without medication. I’m proud of that fact and believe it’s proof of just how strong women can be. I pulled my strength from God and had the support of my husband. My youngest daughter came in only 30 minutes. Everyone jokes about her coming as fast as a pizza.

27. I was pretty much raised as an only child, but I have an older sister I’d like to meet one day.

28. My husband and I have been together for almost 18 years. There have been ups & downs. Yet, no one could ever take his place in my life, heart or spirit. We got a “love thang.” :-)

29. I have somewhat of a photographic memory. Once I’ve read a book I can actually close my eyes and see what’s on which page.

30. I love to create things. My mother, a very creative person and talented seamstress, fostered my creativity early on. I remember sewing a pair of slacks for my Barbie doll. I love to repurpose items. I have a passion for fabric stores, vintage fabric, pretty buttons and notions.

31. “The Notebook” and “The Mirror Has Two Faces” are two of my favorite movies. I love Ella Fitzgerald, Anita Baker &\, Maroon 5 and Nicol Sponberg’s song “Resurrection.”

32. My favorite word is “Grace.” God’s grace in my life is like winning a “lottery” I don’t deserve everyday.

33. I love words. I love books. I love to talk to those I really trust. I love to write. I’ll do it for as long as I live for free. I can even see myself in Heaven penning essays and poems. I won a spelling bee in middle school. The word is h-e-i-r-l-o-o-m. Heirloom. Great word!

34. God’s promises are true. “They are pure, silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times.” (Psalm 12:6) Don’t just let others tell you. Everyone should get to know the Lord’s promises for themselves.

An Artist Enjoys the Journey!

Since I was a little girl, I’ve had a passion for writing, food, fabric, creating and remaking things.  I know, as the saying goes, “I got it honest.  My mother was wonderful to share her bountiful fabric stash and all the retro-vibrant scraps my little hands could find and rise to the challenge of repurposing into treasures all my own.  I enjoyed our trips to the thrift stores to find gobs and gobs of books.  I reveled in our escapades to humongous fabric warehouses that sold fabric by the yard and buttons as yummy-looking as candy.

Not a great deal has changed in this regard.  My adventurous (voracious) passion for undertaking projects just to see where the words, fabric, beads or recycled components will take me ranks only second (or 4th) to my eternal love for God, my creatively brilliant husband and my four beautiful, smart and super-kind children.

I believe that an artist enjoys the journey.  I enjoy weaving words and mixing textiles.  Generally, I sew without patterns and cook without recipes, which earned me the title “the dunk cook.”  This loving title was given to me by my cousin, after she watched my method for cooking delicious pancakes.

I am thrilled to create, to learn new things and to share the process of making ART and crafts with my children.  I dream of wonderful phrases, expressive fabrics, laces, buttons, spools of yummy-colored thread, a tidy work area & am blessed to wake up each day with a God-given passion to create something wonderful, unqiue and useful!

I create what feels right.  Among other things, I collect books, recipes and fabric (to my tidy husband’s (“less is more”) dismay.  Inspired by the past and the present, I try to make modern heirlooms.  I hope you will find something interesting  and inspiring!
